Welcome to
the Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the Society for
Human Resource Management
Message from Chapter President, Daphne Jenkins:
Happy New Year! The start of every year brings about the
opportunity to meet new challenges and goals. I am
excited to have accepted this new challenge of being the
2009 President for the Northwest Louisiana Chapter of
the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). I have
many expectations for myself, for the newly-elected
Board, and for the organization as well. I also have a
dynamic slate of officers for the 2009 Board of
Directors to help me see these goals through and meet
the new challenges that are set before all of us.
SHRM is the world’s largest professional association
devoted solely to the Human Resources profession.
Representing over 250,000 members nationally, the local
chapter is made up of Human Resource representatives
from different employers in the Northwest parishes of
Louisiana, including Caddo, Bossier, Webster, and
Desoto. It also includes representatives from the
counties of Harrison and Panola, in East Texas.
Representatives range from the owners of their
businesses, to Lawyers, to HR Directors, HR Specialist,
HR Generalist, Assistants and even local college
students with aspirations of climbing the corporate
ladder in field of Human Resources.
As we all know, our great nation is headed for a period
of enormous change and expectation. As history is being
made with the first African American, Barack Obama, to
be elected as President of the United States, many
changes will occur and Human Resources and SHRM will
play a significant role in making sure that the
challenges and goals of our new Administration and
Congress will be carried out with competence. SHRM has a
considerable voice in the making and voting of new laws
affecting our workplace. 2009 have already started to
bring about new legislative laws and public policy
changes… and guess who will have to make sure that you
not only are aware of these changes, but guess who will
be there to make sure that they are carried out properly
….. Human Resources will be!
The new Board of Directors held their first meeting to
discuss goals and directions for 2009. Our chapter’s
first goal for 2009 is to enhance the recruitment and
membership drive. We would like to welcome new members
as well as retain our current members. The Board of
Directors would also like to send out a call for all of
our “at-large” members (those that are national members,
but are not local members). We would like to build on
and utilize the expertise knowledge of those members
that’s been in Human Resources, Employment Law, and
Legislative Affairs for a number of years, to help those
that are new to the arena. We would also like to
highlight the need for and exposure to enhance your
knowledge as a HR professional, by studying for the test
to get certified as a PHR, SPHR, or GPHR. As President,
I would like to see more involvement and input from our
members. We will be hosting a Spring Conference and some
of you will be asked to help serve for this event as
well as other events being planned. We would like to see
a community-service project completed as a group this
year…. So be thinking of what you would like to do for
that.
As always, our goal is TO SERVE the needs of the Human
Resources Profession with an influential voice both
locally and nationally. I am very grateful for the
growing membership and looking forward to serving you as
President this for this year. Should you have a need for
anything relating from Absenteeism to Worker’s
Compensation, and all that in between…. Feel free to
contact your local Human Resources Professional
organization – Northwest Louisiana – SHRM.
